Spanish film wedding in L´Empordà inspired by Dalí & the Kennedy´s

This last summer, I had the privilege of photographing, using mostly film photography, an unique and intimate Spanish wedding in l’Empordà, near the Costa Brava and a few kilometers away from Barcelona. It was a wedding inspired by Dalí and the Kennedys. This wedding was not only a celebration of the couple’s love, but also an inspiration to art, style and personal connection with the environment.

Monica and Benjamin wrote to me because they were looking for a film wedding photographer. They wanted their wedding to have both aspects of documentary photography and vintage nostalgia. Monica is in love with the Kennedys and wanted her wedding to have a tribute to them. It was very important to her that the photography was in tune with that nostalgia of the past and hence her choice of film format to photograph their wedding day.

The wedding took place in a private estate surrounded by the beautiful landscapes of L’Empordà: open fields, olive trees and the sound of cicadas in summer. The choice of this place was not accidental. The bride and groom, inspired by Salvador Dalí, wanted the setting to reflect the surreal magic of the artist, fused with the timeless elegance of the Kennedys. And the venue, which had certain modernist details, fit perfectly with their idea.

They decorated the outdoor spaces with personal touches that represented the bride and groom: tables adorned with towers of green figs -a nod to the bride’s childhood and her love for this fruit-, silver candelabras that evoked their family dinners and a white color palette that contrasted with the classic black of the “black tie” dress code. Monica wore a vintage Vera Wang dress that she altered.

Film photography has something special that cannot be achieved with digital. The texture, grain and depth of the photographs tell a story that goes beyond the visual. This medium fits perfectly with the idea of this wedding in L’Empordà.

This intimate wedding, inspired by Dalí, modernism and the Kennedys, was a perfect reflection of how documentary and film photography can help to make memories in a unique and emotional way.
